"Hey, I was wondering. . ."
Why is it so flippin' long between issues?
We'd like to say, "because we put out such a high quality magazine," but we all know the truth about this dog and pony show. It's actually because most of the Taken work full time and can't wait to get home to sleep, play with the kids, pay bills or drink. This is still, at the core, a hobby site.
We do recognize that we've got some momentum behind this thing, but it doesn't change the fact that it takes time to think the stuff up, code it, get images and then organize it all into a web space. In the past, this was the real drawback of doing this on an issue by issue basis. We could have just thrown up each article as we finish it, but that would be haphazard and hard for you guys to keep track of. Or so we thought. So we waited until every section was filled with something new before we update.
But then, as lives became busier, and resources for HTML coding scarcer, along with the usurpation of our original URL by internet squatters, we have come to realise that it is much easier to create a streaming blog style format. This allows us to generate content as our resources permit. It also means we can generate content that is more in tune with the news of the day. We always strove to keep our content relevant, and this will only enable us to ensure it remains so.
One way to ensure you are informed of updated content is to subscribe as a Follower. This requires only that you have a Google Blogger compatible account, and sign up is easy. Just Click on the "Follow" button in the side bar. You can even sign up for email updates by entering your email address in the "Follow by Email" field then clicking "Submit". After a few basic security setup questions, you will be primed to receive emails every time we update with a new article.
That way you can read the mag and then blissfully ignore us until the next article spawns. We really appreciate the rabid fans that yell at us about our timing -- and we want nothing less than to please you with frequent updates, but we do the best we can and we already whip the web monkeys enough.
Where can I read past issues and articles?
The archives are usually updated with the most recent article as they are posted. To view any article posted since 2011, you can click the easily searchable date stamps and browse articles by day. For those seeking a more organised format, you can view the articles by section, by clicking on the specific sections in the side bar. So everything is always there. We're always trying to devise a better, more informative system with titles and search features, and you may see features added, or taken away as we grow the webzine and learn new tricks, or our blog provider rolls out new features.
For any of the Apocrypha 40K Magazine format issues published prior to 2011, we are working on providing a way to view them in their original format, and original content. This may require off site web page server, but when it is ready, you can be sure it will be announced as a news article, and we will update the FAQ and other links as required. We are happy to say that we have been able to save nearly all of the original content, with the exception of a few lost articles that have been lost to the Warp.
Can I submit anything to the magazine?
Yes. However, we are picky and our writers usually get priority. The BEST way to get your stuff into Apocrypha40K is to submit a brief but detailed synopsis to the Editors (an email address will be provided shortly as we work out the specific details). Tell us what you want to write about specifically and what kind of stuff you want to put in the article (images, charts, etc). This synopsis is going to go a long way towards us deciding to use your submission or not, so make it look good. Spell things correctly, use good grammar and infuse it with a bit of personality.
We're looking for any topics that cover Warhammer 40k, the Warhammer 40k universe, Inquisitor, etc. and any coverage of Games Workshop events. They should be new articles and have some images to accompany them. We don't want Index Astartes type coverage of your armies or chapters nor do we really look for battle reports or mini "display" pieces -- unless you have a clever new slant on these types of articles. Don't worry about where it'll go in the magazine. We'll do that -- and we'll probably code it, too. So don't send HTML. We're always short on Model Craft type articles, so this is a great place to start if you have mad skills. If we decide we want the article, we'll send you an e-mail (so don't forget to include it) and talk about specifics. PLEASE be aware that submission is not a promise to publish it. We know you guys work hard on this stuff and we won't try to waste your time, but sometimes it's beyond our control.
How can I link to your website?
We are currently in development of a new banner and button. When it is ready, it will be available here and announced in the news section. Be sure to link it to "http://apocrypha40k.blogspot.com"
What is the Jukebox, and where do I learn more about the music you use in the jukebox?
In the past, we had an embedded Jukebox in the webzine. This may return with the archived magazine version, but will be excluded from the blog for now, as it's quite time consuming to maintain. We always try and provide links to the bands and they will be available in the Legal Section of the archived magazine, if we decide to maintain the Jukebox, though that will depend mostly on bandwidth and other resource constraints.
Can I request articles for you guys to write?
Yes, but we usually write what we know. We're light on some of the playable 40K races in the Taken so some don't get the justice they deserve. This is usually a good time to write a synopsis yourself and submit it!
Why don't you guys ever trash Games Workshop -- especially on the bad stuff like original Lemartes, Gav Thorpe and all the other stuff my newsgroup/forum likes to harp on?
We started the Taken because we got tired of the mindless, thoughtless GW bashing that went on out there. It started as a list and has become a mildly successful magazine. Games Workshop is not flawless and they don't always make great products, but their record is very good and they are the source of a hobby we've all grown to love. So why spend countless hours working on a web site that villifies tiny aspects of a vast body of work? Besides, it's our knowledge that if you guys don't like something, GW already knows and probably is unsatisfied with it themselves. This does not mean we won't call GW to task when they do screw things up, but at the same time, we would rather promote the positive aspects of the hobby rather than harp on the negatives, where a open minded discussion would be more appropriate, and probably more readily received by GW.
And for the record, Gav Thorpe wrote Inquisitor and that makes him a Greater Daemon of Cool. Not to mention you can't use him as your favorite punching bag anymore since he's now a freelance writer for Black Library, instead.
